Vernon Floyd Tyacke was born January 4, 1922 to James and Ella Tyacke on their family farm in the Mossdale district. Like many at that time, he grew up helping with anything necessary on the family farm, learning to hunt and the many things he would enjoy all his life. After completing grade 8, he was full time working on the farm until he enlisted for the army to serve during WW2. While on leave from the military in 1944 he married Shirley Fredin. In 1946 after his discharge from the military they moved onto their own family farm. There they would raise their children and enjoy 69 years of marriage until Shirley’s passing on April 13, 2013. Vern remained in the home, in the yard he loved right up to the end.
Vern was widely known for his love of the outdoors. He was an avid hunter getting more than his share of a prize set of antlers right up to his 90th year. He laid numerous trapping lines for beaver, mink and coyotes each spring. He took great pride in passing down his knowledge of hunting and trapping to his grandchildren. When he wasn’t busy working, he spent hours over the years on his sleds in the winter and his trikes and different quads in the better weather.
He was known for working hard and doing well at all he did. He worked hard to grow crops and raise animals and take care of his family. He was also a sports fan, He thoroughly enjoyed playing baseball as much as he could in his younger years. He enjoyed many curling tournaments with friends and got serious about the sport of horseshoe in his 50’s. This led to a couple of decades of tournament competition. He travelled and competed all across Canada, regionally and nationally, filling up the “trophy room” in his house.
In later years, while he missed loved ones that went before him, he still enjoyed his visits with family and friends. He would never miss an opportunity to coffee at the mall, the curling rink, A&W or Saturdays at Pleasantdale. He faithfully watched the Blue Jays through their good years and bad, always knowing their current stats.
He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Memorial contributions in memory of Vern may be directed to the Pleasantdale Royal Canadian Legion Branch #227 and /or Silver Park Community Hall.
