Obituary
With her family by her side Jean lost her battle with cancer on Monday,December 22, 2014 at Melfort Union Hospital. Catherine Jean was born June 25, 1930 to John Russell and Elizabeth Dickie: twin to Margaret. The girls were the youngest in their family of four with two older brothers William “Bill” and John. Jean grew up on the family farm on “Dickie’s Creek” overlooking Melfort. Jean attended school in Melfort, completing her Grade 12. She then began her life long career in nursing. Jean attended the Holy Family School of Nursing in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, convocating in 1953. Jean met Walter Kiverago in 1958. They were married at the Melfort United Church on November 19, 1960. Jean and Walter had two children: Beverly Ann born December 15, 1965 and John Douglas born August 5, 1968. Jean dedicated her life to her nursing career, working at the Melfort Union Hospital for forty-two years. She spent her first years nursing in the nursery; and 26 years as the night supervisor. In addition to her hours nursing, she made farm meals and organized the boys in the field. In 1983 Beverly went on a Rotary exchange to New Zealand. Walter, Jean, and John were able to spend three weeks visiting with Bev, exploring the country and meeting her host families. Jean retired in 1995 however spent many years being our family nurse. In early retirement Jean and Walter traveled during the winter months. Later years she enjoyed her garden and the quiet of the farm. Jean will be loving remembered by her husband Walter of 54 years, son John (Susan), grandchildren Shaye and Hunter, sister Marg, along with nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her daughter Beverly, her parents John and Elizabeth, brothers Bill and John, and brother-in-law Earl. Service of remembrance was held at Melfort United Church on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Emmanuel Menyereye officiating. Interment followed at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial contributions, in memory of Jean, may be directed to the Rotary Club of Melfort P.O. Box 507, Melfort, SK S0E 1A0.
