Obituary
Funeral Services for Robert were held on Wednesday July 29, 2015 from the Melfort Evangelical Covenant Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Gary Gilkinson officiating. Interment followed at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial contibutions in memory of Robert may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society. Robert Blair Gordon was born in Melfort on August 25, 1941 to Olga and Ed Gordon, their fourth son in a family of seven children. He was raised on the family farm just outside of Melfort. Blair attended elementary school in Melfort and graduated from MCCI in 1959. Blair then entered the family business where he was involved in farming and the gravel crushing operations. He worked with his dad and brothers trucking gravel. Blair was a careful and conscientious driver, usually being the last truck in for the day with the most yards hauled. When Gordon Construction ended their gravel work away from home, Blair worked with Merv on the farm until this spring when his illness prevented him from continuing the work he loved. Blair enjoyed the challenge of trying out new ideas and trends in agriculture. His most useful tool was his computer through which he stayed up to date with agriculture and world events. More than farming, Blair loved to travel: in Canada as far east as Toronto, widely in the USA, as well as Mexico, Costa Rica, and Australia. On many of these trips, he was able to connect with relatives he had never met and has maintained close relationships with them. Blair was a member of the North East Genealogical Society where he served as President for a time. He spent countless hours in researching the Gordon and Persson family histories. The Gordon Family reunions were memorable highlights in his life. He and Cheryl even spent a week whitewater rafting on the Salmon River in Colorado during one of those reunions. His competitive spirit came to light in his love of games. He was always ready for an evening of cards or board games. In our annual Christmas Trivial Pursuit challenge, he usually helped the boys’ side win with his vast general knowledge. Blair loved Canada’s game – hockey. He was an enthusiastic Chicago Black Hawks fan as far back as the Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita days. Even though Blair was hospitalized during the Stanley Cup playoffs this year, he was able to watch every game. Blair passed away on July 24 after a struggle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Olga (1991) and Ed (1982) and brothers-in-law, Wayne Malmgren and Al Shaner. He is survived by his special friend Cheryl Schleger, and his siblings: Lorne (Kathy), Wayne (Muriel), Mervyn, Marilyn Malmgren, Carol Shaner, Dale (Jean) as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
