Obituary
Emma Whittome was born on July 10, 1920 in the Whittome district to Walter and Kristine Nygaard. She was one of 12 children. Emma is survived by her brother Clarence, daughter-in-law Gayle Whittome, son-in-law Chester Lawson, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by her parents, five sisters, five brothers, her daughter Deanna and son Murray.
Emma was six years old when her mother passed away in childbirth. Her older sisters, Dagmar & Ann, took over the mothering role in Emma's life. Emma finished school and worked in Melfort for various households as a housekeeper and cook until she met the love of her life, Mr. Steven Whittome.
Emma married Steve on Oct 23, 1940. They resided in Naisberry on the Whittome family farm that had been established in 1912. They farmed and raised their two children, Deanna and Murray, who were her pride and joy. Their family enjoyed dances, cards and socializing with their neighbors. Emma joined in many escapades and harmless pranks amongst the Naisberry community. Emma was a very dedicated wife and mother who worked tirelessly in her farmyard and garden; cooking, canning and feeding family, farmhands and guests.
Emma loved children and animals. Many nieces and nephews and friend's children spent summers on the Whittome farm. One of her greatest joys was the birth of each and every grandchild and great-grandchild. She was such a proud and loving grandmother.
After retiring from farm life, Emma found a new passion – she was one of the founders of the Melfort & District Museum. She spent countless hours building, curating, collecting and displaying the artifacts, many of which she'd donated herself. She loved restoring antiques and finding a treasure at a garage sale. From a very young age she had a strong love of dolls. Any kind of doll! Her favorite Christmas memory was getting her first doll along with an orange. A lifetime of collecting found over 100 dolls displayed in her house. She knew where each and every one of them had come from and who gave it to her.
Emma had many talents including knitting, crocheting, plastic canvas, leather and copper tooling. These crafts won her many ribbons at the Melfort Exhibition. Emma was an enthusiastic bowler and was proud of her many trophies and the friendships she made through the bowling teams.
She loved her flower beds, rose bushes and garden - she never, ever actually retired from that. She had a full garden and made her last batch of pickles at 94 years old! The cookie jar was always full for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her chocolate chip cookies and flapper pie are classic family favorites.
Emma passed down many traditions and values to her family. She will be remembered as having a warm heart and open door for neighbors, friends and family alike.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday July 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from the St. James Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dave MacPherson officiating. Interment will follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
