Obituary
Raymond James Bethune, left us unexpectedly on November 19, 2017 in his home at Melfort, Saskatchewan. He was born on December 6, 1939 in Melfort to Ruby and Gordon Bethune. His father Gordon was a farmer, handyman and railway worker at one point. His mother Ruby was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. Ray grew up on the family farm and had an interest in flying at an early age. He was a member of the Air Cadets and later taught the Air Cadets. He loved crop spraying and only managed to crash twice, both times walking away. His interests included family, aviation, farming and he loved visiting with people. He could sit down and strike up a conversation with anybody of any age. We used to joke that he could get a lamp post to talk to him. He particularly enjoyed harvest and driving the combine, he often had a Canadian Flag flying outside his cab. To hear Ray play his harmonica or to tell his stories in person or on skype was always a cherished time. He was not a shy guy, he never met a stranger. He was an active member in the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch #30), Melfort Masonic Lodge and Accession Chapter #96 of the O.E.S. as well as the St. James Presbyterian Church of which many Bethune family members have belonged to. He is survived by his children Tracy Bethune, Jade Bethune and Crystal Bethune-Carson, his grandchildren Jasper & Jet Carson. Sister Gloria Crofts (Bethune), his brothers Blaine (Joyce) Bethune and Stanley (Gwen) Bethune. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Memorial contributions in memory of Ray may be directed to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 30.
