Obituary
The family of Beulah Ethel Jean Cox (nee Hansen) announce her passing on February 1, 2017 at Parkland Place, Melfort, Sask., at the age of 96. The eldest of six children born to William & Frances Hansen in Melfort, Sask., Jean attended Brunswick School and Melfort High School. She went on to attend the “Household Science” class in Melfort, and then graduated from the “Home and Convalescent Aid” Program in Saskatoon, 1940. Jean married Frances Karle Cox on June 25, 1941, and they lived in Melfort until Karle enlisted in the Army. They travelled to Winnipeg, Port Arthur, Kingston and Toronto for Karle’s army training. While Karle was overseas, Jean made parachutes in a Kingston nylon factory and later worked in Toronto at a munitions factory putting pins in BREN guns. This was one of the most memorable times of Jean’s life as she was contributing to the war effort. Jean returned to Melfort just before the war’s end and worked at the Melfort Co-Op Hardware until after Karle’s return. Karle and Jean spent most of their married life on their livestock and grain farm, seven miles north of Melfort raising their four children. They enjoyed an active social life with friends, playing cards and dancing. They moved into Melfort in 1973 but continued to farm for many years. Following Karle’s passing, Jean enjoyed her Palace Ridge condo and was happiest when entertaining or visiting with family and friends. Sadly, Jean’s life also knew illness and tragedy with the passing of her son, Bill, her loving husband, Karle, her ever-happy grandson Karle, loving sisters Norma (Delaney), Arleigh (Chatfield), Shirley (MacKenzie); brothers Lyle and Neil Hansen, niece Brenda Weaver (Freeman) and nephew Keith Hansen. Jean is survived by her daughters Gloria Grainger (Lance) of Edmonton, AB., granddaughter Nicole (Justin) and great-grandson William; Loretta Unger (David) of Kinistino, Sask., granddaughters Susan (Neil), Joanne (Don) and great-grandsons Benjamin and Matthew and great-granddaughter Sacha; Aaron (Erin) and great-grandson Nathaniel, daughter Shirley Leonard (Wes) of Edmonton, AB., granddaughter Jessica; sisters-in-law Shirley Hansen, Helen-Louise Nebbling, Elfra Chapman, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean’s family extends their heartfelt ‘thanks’ for the support and care provided to Jean through these last difficult years to Dr. Robert Steffen and his nurse, the Parkland Place staff, the Nirvana staff, the Anglican Church Women Auxiliary (ACW), Shoppers Drug Mart, the Melfort Co-Op, and the Melfort business community where Jean loved to visit. Your kindness will not be forgotten. ‘Thank you’ to Myra Busby and the staff of the Melfort Funeral Home for their comfort during this difficult time.
