Obituary
Shirley Harmon passed away suddenly on August 21, 2014, at the age of 75. Mom was born June 18, 1939 in Owen Sound, County of Grey. She took her schooling in Pathlow, SK, until Grade 10. She met the love of her life, Albert Harmon, and they were united in marriage on November 19, 1955, at the young age of 16. On June 27, 1957, their only child, Karen, was born. She married Keith Reeder in June 1977. Mom wasn’t sure how she was going to handle a son-in-law, let alone one as big as Keith! Dad, on the other hand, was delighted to have a fishing buddy. Her life changed once again when her grandson Jason was born in 1980, and Jeff in 1981. They were proud grandparents. Jeff married Natalie Tessier in 2002 and Jason married Melanie Hrynchyshyn in 2004. Great-grandchildren started arriving quickly with Logan, Jared, Treyton, Mackenzie, Raina & Brenna all born in the span of 5 years. She was extremely proud when Jason & Melanie named her first great-grandchild Logan Albert after Dad. She also couldn’t believe it when she heard she was going to be a great-grandma to twins when Treyton and Mackenzie were born to Jeff and Natalie. All of her great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved getting pictures in the mail and watching their changes. She would always comment on how well-dressed they were and how cute they were. She especially enjoyed seeing the great-granddaughters with their hair done so nicely and in pretty little dresses. Mom loved to cook in her younger years. She baked the most fabulous butter tarts and homemade buns & bread and shared her recipes with many. No one could make flapper pie or rice pudding like Mom. She would entertain many of Dad’s family when they came from BC to visit. I always wondered how Dad could get away with going fishing and then bringing the fish home for Mom to clean. She would have been in the garden, picking and scrubbing her fresh vegetables and, after cleaning his fish, would put on a fabulous supper of fish, fresh vegetables and of course there was always dessert. I would often ask her why we needed our big meal at lunch and she would tell me “Because your Dad works hard and he needs a good home cooked meal at lunch and you need a big meal to go to school.” Mom took special delight in her large gardens and beautiful flowerbed and pots. There was never a shortage of colorful blooming flowers in the summer. Her yard was always perfect and there was never a weed. We could see the yard work was becoming harder for her and it was getting to be a chore instead of a pleasure. Mom’s life was never the same after the love of her life, Albert, passed away in 1994. Part of her went that day too. Her life was further devastated when her Mom, Lillian Forsyth, passed away two years later. Mom was a great caregiver, something she picked up when she work in the 1960’s at the Melfort Geriatric Centre. I never could understand how she could do it and take care of a house and yard. She was predeceased by her husband Albert; parents Lillian Forsyth & Thomas Forsyth; brother Donald Forsyth; sister Lorna (Mike) Papp; niece Marlene and nephew Steve Tokarchik; Albert’s parents Arthur & Clara Harmon; brother-in-law Jess Harmon; sister-in-law & brother-in-law Shirley & Leonard Trenaman. She leaves to mourn her passing her only daughter Karen (Keith) Reeder; grandson Jason (Melanie) Reeder, Logan, Raina & Brenna; grandson Jeff (Natalie) Reeder, Jared, Treyton & Mackenzie; her brother Ronald (Marj) Forsyth; niece Judy Liddle, Shelby & Ty; nephew Guy (Tammy) Forsyth, Jordyn & Rylan; nephew Larry (Bev) Papp; great-nephew, Blaine (LaDawn) Tokarchik, Tyson, Michelle, Carmen & Owen; great-niece Christina (Don) Duh, Shanyne, Shania & Sharla; brother-in-laws Clarence (Marie) Harmon; Frank (Lorraine) Harmon; sister-in-law Millie Harmon; along with other numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside service of remembrance was held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Melfort, SK on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Tim Richards officiating. Memorial contributions, in memory of Shirley, may be directed to Saskatchewan Heart & Stroke Foundation.
