Obituary
Dora McAlister was born in Melfort, SK in 1916 to Ernest and Beatrice Hill of Pleasantdale, SK. as the second eldest of 6 children. Along with her older sister Edith, Dora took an instrumental role in looking after their younger siblings; a role through which she acquired many of the life skills that served her well in later life. In 1939 she married Cameron McAlister of Silver Park, SK where they resided on the McAlister homestead. They had three children: David Ernest, James Cameron, and Colleen Ann. After leaving the family farm, they moved to the Melfort Research Station where Cameron worked for a number of years. They eventually moved to Melfort were Dora worked at the Pioneer Lodge Care Home. Dora was an exceptional seamstress (making a number of her children’s clothes) and homemaker (winning a number of first prizes in the annual Melfort Fair) and an avid gardener who treasured her flowers. Her creativity was reflected in her quilts and crafts. She was an active member of the Women’s Institute and the Harmony Unit of the United Church Women. She is predeceased by her parents Ernest and Beatrice Hill, her husband Cameron (1995) and her five siblings: Edith Neilson, Horace, Gordon, John and Frank Hill. Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Ernest (Kathy), Jim (Maryanne), and Colleen (Gary Clarke); five Grandchildren: Jamie (Delco) McEvoy, Jill (Greg) Morgan, Maureen (Dean) Zimmer, Bruce Clarke and Greg Clarke; Great-Grandchildren: Brooklyn Morgan and Evan Zimmer. The family appreciates the many relatives and friends who have been a part of Dora’s life over the years. Appreciation is also extended to the compassionate and caring staff at Parkland Place where she resided at the time of her passing. After 97 years, she was ready to answer the call of her name on the Roll Up Yonder on July 17th, 2014. Funeral service will be held at the Chapel of Melfort Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Gwendolyn Mills Wood officiating. Interment will follow at Silver Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions, in memory of Dora, may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences to the family may be sent to Melfort Funeral Home at: [email protected]
