Obituary
Kaj Nielsen, the oldest child of Hans Valdemar Nielsen and Anna Nielsen, was born August 31, 1917 in Denmark. Kaj sailed to Canada with his parents on SS Oscar II and arrived in Halifax on March 7, 1927. Kaj’s Dad settled the family in the Thaxted district. Kaj’s sister Rita was born on July 8, 1927.
He attended school at Clapton and then at Thaxted when the school was built there in 1928. They farmed with three 4 horse outfits and walked behind the harrows. They got their first tractor in 1936.
Kaj married Helga Saaby Nielsen on July 26, 1941. The had 4 children Ron, Chris, Murray and Kathy. There are 9 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Kaj loved hunting and fishing through his entire life. Kaj would go logging for Johnny Paul in Hudson Bay for a few months in the winter. He dabbled in developing film, taxidermy, oil painting, flying, cross country skiing and golfing. He also liked to sing and dance. He farmed the land, raised pigs, chickens and a few cows. At the age of 79 he planted 300 Saskatoon bushes which he tended to diligently and some of you have picked berries from this patch. 2017 was the first year that Kaj didn’t pick berries.
Kaj and Helga moved to Legion place around 2003. Kaj moved back to the farm around 2008 and lived with Murray until November of 2016. At that time he moved into Assisted living in Melfort.
Kaj was an elder with the St. James Presbyterian Church. He was also active with the Orange Lodge.
Kaj was predeceased by his parents, his wife Helga in 2004, his sister Rita and his son-in-law Neal Ashdown in 2016.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Ron and Diana Nielsen, Chris and Duncan Dunsire, Murray and Loretta Nielsen, Kathy Ashdown; grandchildren Steven (Jessie) Nielsen, Sheldon (Leanne) Nielsen, David (Jacquie) Nielsen, Scott (Verbena) Dunsire, Michael (Gloria) Dunsire, Craig (Candace) Dunsire, Tamara (Kelly) Tkachuk, Jodi Renee, Dustin (Linnaea) Nielsen, Shawn (Hyun Ju) Ashdown, Jordan Ashdown and their families as well as many nieces and nephews.
