Obituary
Veryl Carlson was a quiet, unassuming woman with a gentle, kind heart and a big smile. She was born on the family farm in the Star City area on April 18, 1923, the second of nine children born to Peter and Roselia (Storla) Helstrom. Veryl had an older brother Lauren, and then brothers Arlie, Alvin, and Clayton; followed by sisters Faye, Marlene and Hazel, and the youngest brother Vernon. Because she was 10 before her first sister arrived, Veryl spent her early years with her brothers and her imagination! From that early age she wanted to become a teacher Following High School, it was off to Regina and a year at Normal School (Teachers College). She began teaching at North Star school and taught there for 3 years. It was while teaching there, that she met Emil Carlson, a tall, good-looking Swede. They were married July 25, 1946 in Star City. Shortly after their marriage, they spent a short time in Vancouver. When they returned to Saskatchewan, they settled in the Lund district north east of Beatty. They purchased the North Star school building, which had been replaced. They moved it to Emil's land, just down the road from his parents. Emil used to say “I got the teacher so I thought I might as well have the school too!” The building was reconstructed so that it became a cozy and welcoming home. Emil and his family were members of the Bethesda Lutheran Church and Veryl soon was baptized and became a member of that congregation as well. Following the birth of their only daughter Deanna in 1951, farm life kept the couple busy but there was always time for community and church involvement and fellowship. Veryl did some substitute teaching, was active in the Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School, and for a time was the church secretary. Veryl enjoyed crocheting, reading, word seek, and jigsaw puzzles. She was an amazing cook and baker. With both her and Emil coming from large families, there were a lot of family events and activities to share. Veryl loved life to the fullest through simple pleasures. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was paramount. She was dedicated to her faith, her home and her family. She loved visiting with friends and family, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren. Although she did travel in western Canada and US, her heart was very much in her home. They moved from the farm to their new home in Melfort in 1982. In 2013, she sold her home and moved to Caskey Place. In January 2017, because her health was failing, she moved to Newmarket Place in Tisdale to be close to family. Veryl passed from this life in the early morning hours of June 17 at Newmarket Place in Tisdale with her family by her side. Veryl was pre-deceased by her loving husband Emil in 2008, her parents Peter and Roselia Helstrom, siblings Lauren (Freda), Arlie, Alvin (Hazel), Clayton, Marlene Baptist and Hazel (Don) Hill and many Carlson in-laws. Veryl is survived by her daughter Deanna (Bill) Serhan; Grandaughters Shannon Baerwald and Lorie (Robin) Samida; her great-grandchildren Madyson Baerwald, Sara Samida and Blake Samida. She is also survived by her sister Faye Harms and brother Vern (Cheryle) Helstrom. Sister in laws Vipsen Helstrom, Jean Helstrom, Eileen Maticieu, Grace (Bob) Ellis; Brother-in-laws Clarence Baptist and Alex Merk and many nieces and nephews. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma but know she is now at peace. Memorial contributions in memory of Veryl may be directed to the Kelsey Trail Health District and/or a Charity of Choice.
