Obituary
We are sad to announce the passing of Gerri Wurtz on June 5, 2020 after a valiant battle with cancer. Gerri was born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan on April 30, 1949, to Gerald and Mary Baldwin.
Gerri developed a passion for horses at a very young age. She saved all of her money to buy her first horse and joined the Nipawin 4-H light horse club. Gerri and the 4-H club traveled around Saskatchewan to perform a musical ride, cementing her love of horses, even though her mother wasn’t particularly thrilled.
Gerri and Bryan married in June of 1977. They purchased their dream farm in 1978 where they could keep their horses. Gerri lived her life on that farm and raised her family with her loving husband.
Gerri took her schooling in Nipawin. After grade 12, she moved to Saskatoon obtaining a B.A. Physical Education and a B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan. In September of 1972, she began her teaching career at Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate as a Physical Education teacher. Gerri retired from teaching in 2009. That summer, Gerri and Bryan built a riding arena so that she could begin her career as a riding instructor and share her love of horses with others.
Gerri leaves behind her husband, Bryan; her son Ward (Melissa) and grandson John Henry; her son Mark (Melissa) and grandsons, Jonathan, Felix and Samuel. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Gerald Baldwin.
Due to COVID-19 a Funeral Service will be delayed until a later date.
Memorial contributions in memory of Gerri may be directed to the Melfort United Church, the Melfort Agricultural Society, STARS Air Ambulance, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Sandra Schmirler Foundation, the SPCA, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or an organization of your choosing.
