It is with great sadness that the family of James Van Burgsteden announces his passing on January 25, 2022 at the age of 96. Jim was born in Achterveld, the Netherlands, on July 16, 1925. He was the eldest of five boys, and grew up on the farm near Achterveld. He realized at a younger age that he wanted to be a farmer, and that this would be difficult in the Netherlands with four younger brothers present. He married Aleida Van Dijk (the love of his life) on March 16, 1952, and they boarded a ship to immigrate to Canada six days later, not knowing if they would see their families again. They worked on a farm in Dundurn for one year, where their first child Harry was born. They moved to Allan for the next two years, where Betty was added to the family. They moved to Kinistino with all of their belongings in the back of their one-ton truck in the spring of 1955, where they began their farming career. The remaining seven children were born there, and they lived on that farm for the next 63 years. They moved to Saskatoon to Stonebridge Crossing Care Home in 2018 where they lived until Jim’s passing. Jim and Ali were very busy raising their large family and trying to build a life and farm in Canada. They never complained about their situation, but it was 25 years until they were able to return to their homeland to visit their families. Many of the early years on the farm were difficult, and it was not until the mid-1970’s that they started to see the benefits of their years of hard work. Around this time they started taking some vacations, which led to them taking longer winter vacations and ultimately purchasing a winter home in Yuma in 1992. They spent the next 23 winters in Yuma, and enjoyed frequent visits from their children and grandchildren. Jim and Ali’s deep faith carried them through some difficult times, and even in the busiest time of harvest, they usually attended mass, and did the same whenever they were travelling. Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife of 69 years, Ali, his children Betty (Harry), Barbara (Arie), Joan (Andy), Rosemary (Marcel), Gerald (Darla), John (Sharon), and Tony (Kim). Also remembered by his grandchildren Steven (Lisa), Michael (Stephanie), Daniel (Jackie), Paul (Chantelle), Vanessa (Kevin), Patrick (Maria), Darran (Aly), Mark, Erin (Ollie), Neil (Carissa), Thea, Corrie (Zach), Etta, Kayla, Clarissa (Kyle). In addition, remembered by his great-grandchildren Lily, Julie, Jake, Carter, Mason, Alexander, Esme, Aleida, Sydney and Elise, and his brother Henk in The Netherlands. He was predeceased by sons Jimmy and Harry, and by granddaughter Lisette. Memorial contributions in memory of James may be directed to the Kinistino Cemetery Society.
