Obituary of Edward (Bud) Arthur Holmes

Please share a memory of Edward (Bud) to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edward Holmes was born on November 26, 1939 in Kinistino, Saskatchewan. He passed away on May 3, 2023 in Royal University Hospital after a long battle with a bacterial infection, finally succumbing to a stroke.
Edward is survived by his beloved wife Judy Holmes; son Michael; daughter Carrie (Dwayne) Mykytyzyn with their children Colby (Randi) and Avery; son Curtis (Carrie) with their children Ethan and Kaitlyn; siblings Margery (known as Marge) (Lorne) Sinclair; Lorraine (known as Lana) (Lloyd) Larsen; Dorothy (Wilbert) Holmgren; Garry (known as Sam) (Sandi) Holmes; Arthur (Shelley) Holmes; and many nephews and nieces and many friends.
Edward was predeceased by his parents Edward Trawin (Ted) and Gladys Holmes and his in-laws Axel and Violet Edeen.
Edward and Judy married on June 3, 1966. They moved many times, but eventually lived just down the road from his parents. After Judy’s parents moved into Kinistino, dad and mom bought their farm and moved onto it. The final move was into Melfort #3 Sunset Crescent. They raised three children, two sons and one daughter. They dedicated their lives to Jehovah and were baptized together in Nipawin on April 22, 1972.
Dad loved the outdoors, whether it was barbecuing and sitting on the deck or working in the yard and garden, he must have inherited this trait from his grandfather, Newman Holmes as his grandpa was an avid gardener. Even last summer, dad was quite excited about planting 250 hills of potatoes. He was such an industrious man who loved physical work.
Many might be surprised to know of dad’s great love of music. His greatest regret was that he did not take piano lessons longer. His grandmother (Ellen Thorne) was an accomplished pianist and since, she thoroughly enjoyed passing on her knowledge, taught music lessons to Marge, dad and Lana each night after school. His fondest memory was the trips to Melfort for the weekly music lesson. Each Saturday, Grandpa would bundle them up into the Model A for the weekly trip. The lunch could not be touched until the outskirts of Beatty was reached. Then, what a scramble!
When we think of dad, one of the things that come to our minds was his great sense of humour. He loved to tell jokes and funny stores from the good old days. We would ask him to re-tell stories to us. Each time he did we would laugh just like it was our first time hearing them. Dad also loved talking to anyone and everyone. Many times, dad would fall behind because he stopped to talk to someone. When you asked who the person was, he would say he wasn’t sure. He genuinely was interested in people and cared for them. That is who dad was!
At the end, dad’s thoughts were always about mom. Even a few days before his passing, Michael remembers dad calling his name twice. When he went over to see what dad wanted, he wanted to know where mom was. Michael told him where she was and dad said, “drive mom”. Obvious to us all, he was making sure that his beloved wife would be looked after. He always wanted a kiss from mom and constantly told her that he loved her!
No wonder, dad was truly loved and will be deeply missed!!
