Obituary of Mona Sefton

Please share a memory of Mona to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Daisy Mona Redman was born in Melfort, Sk. at Mrs. Stanton’s Nursing Home on September 30, 1926. Her parents Billie and Lucy were thrilled to welcome their first child. Fraser, Garry and Evelyn would follow to complete the family. Childhood was spent at Milepost 101 (where Grandpa was a grain buyer) and at the Redman farm in Pleasant Valley. After completing her schooling at Melinda, Mona attended Business College in Prince Albert. She often talked of walking down the viaduct every day to attend classes. Upon graduation Mona worked at the Royal Bank in Melfort. On November 29, 1947 she married Lloyd Thomas Sefton in Melfort.  Son William Thomas (Bill) was born on April 19, 1950 followed by daughter Judy Maureen on Feb. 28, 1956. Mona chose to stay at home to raise her family, which was very common in the 50’s and 60’s. She was a stickler for cleanliness. Our house was always immaculate! Mom was an excellent cook, a seamstress when we needed new clothes, a fixer of many scraped knees and a quiet disciplinarian (she wielded a large wooden spoon together with a supply of Zest soap). In the summer of 1974, after many years of persuading, Mona finally accepted a part-time position at Belle’s Style Shop in Melfort. This was not work, as she loved fashion and excelled for many years helping clients get just that perfect outfit. Even though Mona enjoyed travelling to many countries and provinces, she always had a special love for the cottage at Candle Lake – which was purchased from a dear family friend, Florence Garrett, in 1988. Even after Dad’s untimely passing in 1994, she never missed celebrating her birthday at the cottage. Mona was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her Father, Mother, two brothers and a sister, her husband Tom and her son Bill. Left to mourn “a long life well lived” are her daughter Judy (Dr. Leonard Wankel), Len’s children Larissa (Mike); Mark (Susan); Andrea (Jarrod), three grand-children (Reuben, Eve and Mason), daughter-in-law Mary and sister-in-law Doreen, plus several nieces and nephews.
