Doris Jean (Levring) McKenzie, aged 90, passed away peacefully on June 26 2024. She was born December 26, 1933 on the Levring Homestead 4 miles north of Melfort. She was the youngest and only daughter to Chris and Annie Levring. She had three older brothers, Jack Levring, Bill Curtis and Ray Curtis.
She spent her school years at Thaxted and Stoney Creek schools and then on to high school in Melfort. Following high school, she worked at the telephone office for a couple of years. This was a job she really enjoyed. A few years later she travelled to BC to visit relatives. On her way back through Calgary, she followed in her brother Bill’s footsteps and enlisted in the Air Force. She was stationed in Ontario and was happy it allowed her to spend time with brother Bill and Helen who lived in Ottawa.
Doris returned home and worked at the OK Economy in Melfort. On August 5, 1958 she married Ernest McKenzie. They lived on the McKenzie Homestead where they farmed with Ernie’s dad and uncle.
Doris, Ernie, Chris and Carey spent the first few years of the kids’ lives living in the same yard as Ernie’s parents. In 1967 Alyson was born and the family moved to their own yard 1 mile north.
Doris worked with Ernie on the farm, raised the kids and spent her time working on her garden, flowers and trees in the summer. In the winter she sewed for her kids and her grandkids. She made coats for the men and sewed many outfits for the girls and knit for the grandkids. Her family was her pride and joy and she took great pride in caring for them.
She was an intellectual who enjoyed reading and loved doing all different types of crafts. She also enjoyed meeting up with and spending time with the Lenvale Ladies’ Club. Doris was a woman of strong faith and was always involved in her church. She taught Sunday school, was involved with the Ladies Missionary Club and looked after the church library.
Through the years her mental health was a challenge at times, but she lived her life with courage and grace relying on her faith. She was a kind and gentle soul, who will be missed by many.
