Obituary
Ruth Unger was born July 30, on the Leland farm southwest of Birch Hills, SK. Her mother, Anna, sent the two older children – Arnold and Janet – out to play while she was busy in the house giving birth to mom who weighed in at four pounds. She was always small but mighty in her gentle way. Mom finished Grade 8 at Tiger Hills. She helped her father with the cattle and by the time she was 15 she was working out as a hired girl. When she was 16, she went to work for the Unger’s at Round Lake. This is where she learned many of the skills and work ethic that would serve her throughout life. It is also where she met Dad, "Pat"…they were married October 18, 1939. Mom was 19. They established their own farm further east of where Dad grew up, starting out in a one room granary. They had three children: Robert (Bobby), Marilyn and David. Mom was very wise. She was an immaculate homemaker, excellent at everything she put a hand to. She was a great cook, a perfectionist seamstress, knitter and quilter, an ambitious gardener. She was hospitable and generous. She loved people and treasured many friends. She and Dad moved their farmhouse to Kinistino in 1980. Late in life she and Dad took up fishing. They spent many good times at Little Bear Lake. I never thought I would see Mom murdering frogs to get the big fish, but she did. Mom was very involved in the St. George Anglican Church, a community bible study, the hospital auxiliary the quilter’s group, the community choir, Saturday coffee time with the girls and, of course, BINGO. She was always willing to help and contribute in her district and in town. Above all she was gentle and loving. She endured her last many years of declining physical health with dignity. Her amazing Viking heart kept beating in her poor little body. Written by her daughter, Marilyn Cay Many thanks to The Melfort Funeral Home, the Anglican Ladies who are providing the lunch and the wonderful team at Jubilee Lodge.
